January offered some striking examples of students and educators creating new pathways in San Antonio. In this edition, we highlight a high-school senior’s college scholarship, a university showcase that rewarded student initiative, and a district pilot that brings mentors into elementary classrooms.

🎓   STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

01 / A CAST Med senior earns a full college scholarship

San Antonio ISD profiled Aneesa Moreno, a CAST Med High School senior, on January 30 after her selection through the QuestBridge National College Match. Her match with Colorado College came with a full four-year scholarship. Moreno’s story illustrates the value of exploring specialized academic pathways and learning early about college-access programs.

CAST Med offers healthcare and biomedical-science pathways, including opportunities to pursue industry-recognized certifications. Moreno told the district about the teachers and school experiences that helped make her next step possible. For students thinking about college, her story offers a practical lesson: ask counselors about national scholarship programs early, and research admission and funding requirements before senior year.

📚   RESEARCH & OPPORTUNITY

02 / UT San Antonio recognizes hands-on learning

On January 9, UT San Antonio reported that more than 50 undergraduate and graduate students participated in its Roadrunner Experience Showcase, presenting work spanning biomedical engineering, study abroad and nonprofit ventures. The top three presenters received a combined $7,000 in scholarship awards.

The showcase, organized by the Najim Center for Innovation and Career Advancement and the Office of Undergraduate Research, demonstrates that experience outside the classroom can be a meaningful part of education. A research project, community initiative or internship can develop communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills as well as disciplinary knowledge.

🤝   COMMUNITY & MENTORSHIP

03 / A school district tests a new way to support students and teachers

In a January 15 update, San Antonio ISD described its Thrive Time pilot at selected elementary schools. District staff, community organizations and high-school education interns lead enrichment and character-building activities while classroom teachers receive concentrated planning time. The program involves partners including Good Samaritan, Communities in Schools and Boys & Girls Club of San Antonio.

It is a reminder that mentorship need not wait until college. Students preparing for education careers can gain real experience helping younger children, while community partners can become part of a school’s daily work.

✦   YOUR NEXT STEP

What students can take away

  • Look beyond grades. Ask about research, community projects, career and technical education, and opportunities to present your work.
  • Start scholarship research early. Learn eligibility rules and recommendation requirements before application season.
  • Become a mentor. Tutoring, volunteering and peer support can give younger students access to experience they would not otherwise have.
