Say NO to Data Centers

Our communities deserve a voice before large data center projects reshape the places we live.

This initiative calls for a pause on new approvals until communities have clear, local information about water, electricity, public costs, and long-term impacts—and a meaningful say in what happens next.

Why ask for a pause?

Data centers can bring useful digital services and investment. But large projects can also require substantial electricity, water, land, and utility upgrades. Before approving more projects, residents should be able to see the evidence and understand who bears the costs.

Water is local

Cooling needs vary by facility and weather. Communities need project-specific water plans, transparent reporting, and drought safeguards before permits are issued.

Plan the power

Large new loads can require generation and grid upgrades. Transparent planning should show how reliability will be protected and who pays for added infrastructure.

Communities count

Residents should have timely notice, accessible impact information, public hearings, and a real opportunity to shape decisions before construction begins.

Plan water protections before construction begins.

Grimm, Green Nylen, and Kiparsky’s 2026 UC Berkeley water policy report explains how site selection and facility design shape water savings and recommends assessing water use during planning.

The goal is responsible decision-making: independent studies, public disclosure, protections for existing customers, and enforceable community safeguards before new projects move forward.
